demerits of a census investigation are: It is a costly method since the statistician closely observes each and every item of the population. It is time-consuming since it requires a lot of manpower to collect the data. There are many possibilities of errors in a census investigation.

Census Method or Complete Enumeration

                 

Population or universe in statistics denotes the totality of items under study. A complete enumeration of all items in the population is known as census survey. Hence it is also called Method of complete enumeration. In India, census data are published by the Register General of India.

                 

Merits:-

                     

  • It studies every unit in detail.
  • The results obtained will be highly accurate and more relaible.
  • This method is free from sampling errors.
  • Collected data are useful for further studies.

                   

Demerits:-

                         

  • It involves a great deal of time, money and energy.
  • Requires a large army of enumerators.
  • Possibilities of statistical errors because of voluminous data.
