  2. Calcination : the carbonate ores are changed into oxides by heating strongly in limited air.

Difference between roasting and calcination :

  1. Roasting is used to separate sulphide ores whereas calcination is used to separate carbonate ores.
  2. Roasting Is done in excess air whereas calcination is done in limited air.

Example :

2ZnS + 3O2 - - - > 2ZnO + 2SO2 ( roasting)

ZnCO3 - - - - > ZnO + CO2 ( calcination)
