Before I answer this in an approach, I would like to know the view point from where you asked the question. Please let me know.
I will explain you the operation of radiators in most ic engines used in car.
Things that you will need to know before understanding the operation:
Heat teansfer by conduction and convectionLMTDFins
Ok then.. cooling of the engine is utmost necessary for proper functioning of the engine through its optimised temperature.
If you get a close look on engines the blocks are designed in a way for the passage of cooling agents. E.g air, water or oil. Fins are also attached to the the block as it increases the effective area of heat transfer
As, Q=kAdT/dx
Where Q is heat transfer, A is the area. So if we consider other parameters as constant Q~A.
In IC engines same concept is applied. When the car moves, engine block is always exposed to atmospheric air. As the car moves in speed, more fuel enters leading to high temperature generation.
So air comes in contact with the block and by conduction and convection heat gets transferred from block to air. This changes the internal energy of air and since hotter air is lighter than cold air, cold air pressurises the hot air out and itself gets hot and this process continues.
For different phases, different application is used. But the basic concept is same.
Its the same concept when you feel cool standing under fan as it removes the hot air near and supply cold air which extract the heat from your body and recirculates.
Hope this answers your query..
Cheers!!
