When the terrestrial plants first appeared in the ancient geologic time, the atmospheric CO2 concentration was several fold higher than today. Ultimately, the CO2concentration became reduced to the present low values. It is believed that the relative abundance of land plants was mainly responsible for the substantial reduction in CO2 concentration by photosynthetic assimilation.
