Modifications of Stem.

1. Storage -     Underground stems of potato, ginger, turmeric, zaminkand, colocasia are modified to store food in them.

2. Support -      Stems act as organs of perennation to tide over the conditions unfavourable for growth. Stem tendrils which develop from from axillary buds, are slender and help plant to climb.

3. Protection -     Some plants modify their stems into thorns or spine over them. This helps them avoid danger of predators.

4. Vegetative Propagation -    Underground stems of some plants such as grass & strawberry, etc., spread to new niches and when older parts die new parts are formed.
