Answer:

monsoon season is essential to defining and understand-

ing the IAV of the AIR. The traditional definition of the

Indian summer monsoon as comprising the months of

June, July, August and September (JJAS), though conve-

nient for operational purposes, is arbitrary. The Indian

summer monsoon may be regarded as a result of the

seasonal march of the tropical convergence zone (TCZ)

beyond 10 °N (Gadgil, 2003). The physical monsoon sea-

son is thus delineated by the establishment of the TCZ

around 10 °N.

The physical length of the Indian monsoon season (the

‘length of the rainy season’, or LRS) could, therefore,

vary from year to year, as the internal and external forc-

ings responsible for the onset and withdrawal of the

monsoon may vary. In fact, it is known that even the

traditionally defined onset date has large variability, hav-

ing a standard deviation of 8–9 days, with the earliest

and latest onsets differing by 46 days (Ananthakrishnan

and Soman, 1988). The withdrawal date also has signif-

icant IAV. It may be recalled that the seasonal monsoon

rainfall is essentially a statistical average of intraseasonal
