1) When ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄.7H₂O) crystals are heated in dry test tube, their color changes from light green to while and they lose their water of crystallization to become anhydrous ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄).

2) On further heating, the anhydrous ferrous sulfate decomposes into ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃), sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and sulfur trioxide (SO₃). The following reaction takes place:

FeSO₄ + Heat = Fe₂O₃ + SO₂ + SO₃
