Detection powder. Some places will sell it as a powder to sprinkle on objects. When one touches the object the silver nitrate will chemically stain the hands a sort of purple color.
There are other uses, but I was scarred for life as a kid by a dad who, as a doc, had easy and ready access to the cautery sticks and was all too ready to use them to, heaven forbid, heal me. My young self did not recognize the benefit, sadly, and they remain a device of torture even to this day. Just typing this answer has re-invigorated the twitchy eye.
Hope it helps...

it is used for jewellery and silvertableware, where appearance is important. Silver is used to make mirrors, as it is the best reflector of visible light known, although it does tarnish with time. It is also used in dental alloys, solder and brazing alloys, electrical contacts and batteries.
