we have to find the oxidation state of vanadium in the ions VO²⁺ and VO₄³¯ respectively.

solution : for VO²⁺ ion,

let oxidation state of vanadium in VO²⁺ = x

so, x + (-2) = +2

⇒x = +2 + 2 = +4

for VO₄³¯ ion,

let oxidation state of vanadium in VO₄³¯ = x

so, x + 4(-2) = -3

⇒x - 8 = -3

⇒x = +8 - 3 = +5

Therefore the oxidation state of vanadium in the ions VO²⁺ and VO₄³¯ are +4 and +5 respectively.
