In each of these phases, there is a prophase, a metaphase, and anaphase and a telophase. In meiosis I these are known as prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I and telophase I, while in meiosis II they are known as prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II and telophase II

Phases of Miosis I :-

i. Leptotene

  • DNA present as a Web
  • DNA starts condensing and coiling
  • Thin long thread like chromosomes appears.

ii. Zygotene

Homologous chromosomes start pairing and this process of association is called Synapsis

Each pair of synapses homologous chromosome called a Bivalent or Tetrad.

iii. Pachytene Phase

Crossing over occurs between non sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes .

Crossing over is carried by Recombinase (a enzyme).

iv. Diakinesis

Point of contact that is Chaismata move towards the end of sister chromatid and this process is called Terminalisation.
