QUESTION:- what are the physical significance of dipoles
ANSWER:- for most of the molecules the centres of +ve and -ve charges will coincide,so their moment (dipoles) is 0 and these molecules are known as non polar molecules
€. The examples are CH4 & CO2
€. They can develop a dipole moment by the application of an electric field
€. But in the case of some molecules the centres of -ve and +ve charges do not coincide.and they have a permanent electric dipole moment even in the absence of the electric field and these molecules are also known as polar molecules
€. Polar molecules example:- water (H2O)
