Women were held in great esteem during the Rigvedic Period . They enjoyed equal rights with men. But in later Vedic Age man's position in the family became superior. Nevertheless, Women in higher families were still given education . The practice of Svayamwara granted them the right to choose their own husbands. No doubt Polygamy and dowry systems had become common . Women could no longer take part in political and social spheres.
