Ray propagation in optical fibres depends on the angle of incidence and reflection of the rays(i.e total internal reflection). The phenomenon of total internal reflection takes place when the angle of refraction (critical angle) becomes 90° in most optical fibre.The incident angle of ray for which angle of refraction is 90° is calling critical angle. If the angle is greater than this the ray is reflected back. But in the case of optical fibre whose core is made of glass and cladding is of plastic the critical angle is 82°. In this case if the angle is less than 82° the ray is reflected back.

The angle of refraction at the interface between two media (core and cladding) can be calculated using Snell's law:

n1SinI = n2SinQ

where n1 and n2 are refractive index of two mediums n1>n2, I is angle of incidence, Q is angle of refraction.
