What are the possible types of pollinations in chasmogamous flowers. Give reasons.
Answers
Answer:
Chasmogamy is the condition of opening of flowers so as to expose both the anthers and stigma for pollination. Depending upon the sequence of maturity and position of anther and stigma, self pollination and cross pollination can occur.
a. Self pollination : It occurs when both the anthers and stigma mature at the same time and the two happens to come in contact with each other.
b. Cross pollination : Occurs if anthers and stigma mature at different times or if they exhibit self sterility. It is 2 types. (i) Geitonogamy (ii) Xenogamy.
(I) Geitonogamy : The transfer of pollen grains from anther to the stigma of another flower of the same pants. It is functionally cross pollination involving a pollinating agent, genetically. It is similar to autogamy. Since the pollen grains comes from the same plant.
(ii) Xenogamy : The transfer of pollen grains from the flower of one plant to the stigma of another plant. This is the only type of pollination which brings genetically different types of pollen grains to the stigma.
