BHUBANESWAR: The police commissionerate have launched an SMS campaign to sensitize Durga Pujarevellers about precautions to take to prevent snatching, burglary and thefts. This is the first time the twin cities police have resorted to such a technique to reach out to citizens.
"You are requested to remain alert during Durga Puja rush. Take adequate precautions to prevent snatching and other crimes. Immediately inform the police or dial 100 if you come across any suspicious characters around you," read the text message.
Twin cities commissioner of police R P Sharma said the precautionary messages were being sent to the people of the twin cities with the help of a few telecom service providers. "This is the best way to sensitize people, even though we have been spreading awareness among the citizens about safety tips on our website, hoardings and during public functions. We hope this will prevent snatching, theft and burglary," Sharma told TOI.
Police said they had formed special squads to crack down on criminal elements. Night patrolling and road blocking have been intensified, police said. Police have also roped in volunteers to help them prevent crimes and regulate traffic during the pujas.
It will be a testing time for the city police to regulate traffic. This assumes significance in view of the absence of adequate parking lots and acute shortage of traffic cops to control crowds.
