In the United States, these regulations are governed differently at the federal, state, and local level. To complicate things further, the prerequisites for a political party vary from state to state. We can take couple of basic regulations that are generally across the board for political parties in the United States.

First, any organization seeking status cannot accept money outside of the regulations of federal law. This is one rule that is true for any political party in the country. In federal law, a political party is simply defined as an organization who's candidate appears on the ballot. Ballot access, however, is governed by state law.

While requirements vary by state, they generally all require sufficient interest. This is to say that they can only be established by a petition with a certain number of signatures. Furthermore, their candidate must receive a certain number of votes for the group to continue as a political party.

In a democracy, a political party is necessary to help run the government.  This is accomplished through the election of a party leader. A party leader seeks to manifest the goals that are common to its constituents.

Typically, a political party consists of four main parts: the leader, the secretary, the treasurer, and the chairperson.  Their duties are as follows.  The leader is the spokesperson responsible for holding the power of the party.  They represent the party and are considered the figurehead.  The secretary maintains the daily records of meetings.  They are responsible for the paperwork of the party.  The treasurer is held responsible for monetary duties.  The chairperson forms the strategies necessary for obtaining members.  They also head up general meetings.
