There are two reasons:

1st Reason
We are blind to our own shortcomings. we think that no matter how hard it is for everyone else, it'll be easy for us because we're just so blo ody marvellous. This also means that we don't learn from the mistakes of others because we think we're better than they are. This also leads us to holding onto our theory when it's shown to be inadequate in preference to re-designing it or giving up because then we'd have to admit that we got it wrong.

2nd Reason
Reality is always more complex than we give it credit for. Donald Rumsfeld put it brilliantly when he said "There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know." To that list, we must also add the Known Wrongs, the things we think we know but which are actually wrong.
