Bonjour Ami,

In aerobic respiration, breakdown of pyruvate takes place in presence of oxygen to give rise 3 molecules of carbon dioxide and water. The release of energy in aerobic respiration is much more than anaerobic respiration. It can be in presence of oxygen in cytoplasm, absence of oxygen in yeast and lack of oxygen in muscle cells.

I hope this answer helped you.

Glycolysis, the initial stage of glucose metabolism, takes place in the cytosol and does not involve molecular O2. It produces a small amount of ATP and the three-carbon compound pyruvate. In aerobic cells, pyruvate formed in glycolysis is transported into the mitochondria, where it is oxidized by O2 to CO2.
