We can obtain oxygen gas from air by fractional distillation of liquid air. The separation is based on the fact that the different gases of air have different boiling points, when in liquid form.
Air is compressed to a high pressure and is then cooled by decreasing the temperature. This cooled air is allowed to expand quickly into a chamber through a jet. This process is repeated again and again. Ultimately, the air gets so cooled that it turns into liquid air. This liquid air is allowed to warm up slowly in a fractional distillation column, where gases get separated at different heights according to their boiling points. Liquid Oxygen with boiling point -183oC boils off last and is collected as oxygen gas from the bottom of the fractional distillation column.
