The moulding sand should have following properties for casting process:

1.Flowability

2.Porosity

3. Collapsibility

4. Cohesiveness or strength

5.Adhesiveness

6. Refractoriness

Properties of Moulding Sand:

1.Flowability

  • The ability of cast sand to behave like a liquid when impacted is called Flowability
  • Because of this property, sand can easily take up space in the casting box and give it its shape. This allows the sand to compact to a compact density and let it pack around the sample.

2. Porosity or permeability:

  • It is the ability of sand that it allows gases to pass through it easily.
  • Some gases dissolve in the molten metal and as this molten metal begins to solidify, these dissolved gases escape from the molten metal and attempt to escape from the casting sand.
  • If the sand is not porous enough, these gases will not be able to escape from the mold and will be trapped in the casting and create pits in the casting metal.

3.Collapsibility

  • The ability of the cast sand to sag after the molten metal solidifies is called Collapsibility.
  • After the molten metal solidifies, the sand must collapse in order for the metal to contract freely.

4 Cohesiveness or strength

  • The ability of sand particles to stick together is called cohesion.

5. Adhesiveness

  • The ability of sand particles to stick to another object is called Adhesiveness.

6.Refractoriness

  • The ability of foundry sand to withstand the high temperatures of molten metal without melting into it is called refractory.
