the world puranas literally means ancient old and it is a vast genre of Indian literature about a wide range of topics, particularly myths, legend and other traditional lore

1) Purana are the sacred literature of Hindus.They contain stories about gods, goddesses, such as Vishnu, Shiva, Durga and Parvati.

2) They also contain details on how they were to be worshiped. They are written in simple Sanskrit verse, and were meant to be known to everyone in the society, including women and shudras, who do not study Vedas

3) Puranas were probably recited in temples by priests, and people came to listen to them. The popular epics that were popular for a very long time are Ramayana and Mahabharata
