Be at least 21 years of age. hold a minimum BJA Grade of 1st Dan, or equivalent via the BJA technical grading assimilation process. a minimum of two years' experience of regular judo coaching.

The remaining judoka must undergo a qualifying process to earn a spot for the Games through the world ranking list prepared by International Judo Federation as of 25 May 2020. The top 18 athletes in each division directly qualify, though each NOC is subjected to a limit of 1 judoka per division.
