According to Indian Constitution, Governor is appointed by the President of India and obviously on the advice of Cabinet. But this matter has became more of political and awarding people leaning towards the political party in power. But sometimes good, experienced, academicians etc can also become governor depending on government's morality.

Now, the question that how you can become governor.

I think anyone targeting this post can go any of following way ( but most often fail ):

Become an IAS, IPS officer and establish yourself as an important personality on all India level. Then, perhaps a good government bring you to Governor's office. You can also be nominated to Rajya Sabha and then to Governor's office.Be a reputed person of a big party by investing your 30–35 years and get the post.Your identity ( religion, caste etc.) can also help you get that post ( Don't take it otherwise, I am talking about people from backward communities who became a pioneer in that particular community). Sometimes, political parties also want to appease any particular community. You should always remember that no one of younger age and inexperienced can become governor. As this is a responsible post and Governors are required to take tough decisions. However, sometimes this post is misused by the political party in power. That's a different matter.

1)The qualifications for governor vary from state to state as specified in each state's constitution.

2)In general most states require that a candidate hold U.S. citizenship, be of a certain age, and be a resident or registered voter of the state for a certain number of years prior to the election.
