Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956), better known as Baba Saheb, was a redoubtable champion of the Dalits (or Depressed Classes). He himself was a Dalit. A great orator, he ignited the minds of his followers to stand up for their rights.
As a student, Baba Saheb was bright and hard-working. After obtaining a Ph.D in Economics from the Columbia University, New York, and a DSc. from the University of London, he became a barrister.
On his return to India, Baba Saheb organized the Dalits into a formidable force with a sense of self-dignity. Around the time, Gandhiji too was waging a war against untouchabilty and urging caste Hindus to give up the heinous practice. However, response from the caste Hindus was slow. Baba Saheb felt justified in demanding a separate electorate for the Dalits since the Hindu society denied them basic human rights and dignity. Gandhiji thought that a separate electorate would not solve the problem and he went on a fast to appeal to Baba Saheb to drop his demand for a separate electorate and to the caste Hindus to stop the practice of untouchability. Fearing for his life, Baba Saheb agreed to the idea of reserved seats within the general Hindu category, a system that continues to this day.
Baba Saheb was a great jurist. As the first Law Minister of Independent India, he played a key role in framing the Constitution of the Republic of India which came into force on January 26, 1950.
