The population growth rate of the world — that is, the ratio of the increase in population per year to the population — has actually been continuously decreasing since the 1960s.
As you can see, the population growth in red peaked in early 1960s and has nearly halved in the past few decades. Of course, a reduction in the growth rate still means an increase in population as long as the rate remains positive. Also, if the population growth rate does not fall enough to compensate for the increasing population, the absolute increase in population also rises. This is why slope of the population curve will take a couple more decades to fall.
