The toxic levels of

air pollution

in and around Delhi is creating quite a menace. Adding to the severity, the changing weather conditions have locked the pollutants in the air and made the situation worse. Doctors are warning people of dire consequences and discouraging them from stepping outdoors.

An analysis of Delhi’s air pollution and future trends says that 60% of Delhi’s particulate matter pollution comes from neighbouring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, even if Delhi were to adopt the cleanest-grade fuel available, ensure that power plants in the vicinity adopt stringent emissions and ensure tidy pavements, pollution would persist well above globally-recommended safe levels, unless neighbouring states too adopted similarly stringent policies. Even if Delhi’s neighbours were to cooperate, it would at best halve Delhi’s pollution and still be short of the government-ideal of 40 microgram/cubic metre. This is because Delhi’s geographical location and land-use patterns are such that a fixed mass of particulate matter will persist. Delhi’s particulate matter pollution hovers between 300 and 900 microgram/cubic metre, depending on the weather.

There are many reasons for air pollution in Delhi, some of them are:
1) Delhi has a large population due to which a large amount of wastes are produced everyday.
2) Having a large number of families, every family has almost two motor vehicles.
3) It's a fact that Delhi has more number of vehicles as compared to the total number of vehicles in Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai.

Yes, there is a major role of neighbouring states like Punjab and Haryana because the gases produced by the burning of dead wheat plants usually go to Delhi and increase the air pollution level of Delhi.
