People used excessive fertilizers in the fields and fertilizers were carried down to the lake during rains. The phosphates and nitrates contained in the fertilisers enriched the water in the lake. This phenomena is called eutrophication. When surface of water is completely covered, shortage of light and dissolved oxygen in the water body resulted in the death of fishes.
