What are the reasons for high density of people in cities like Chennai coimbatore and madurai?

Because post independence, It is the only metropolitan city in south of India. So, the chances were limited in other places than Chennai. Moreover it was an industrialized city. 
The recent stats on linguistic majority in the below order,
Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and others.
