what are the reasons for the people to fight for democracy?
Answers
Answer:
Out of all the possible governments, democratic government is the sole type of government that allows the common man to have a say in the politics of a nation. Through electing a local representative into a centralized government (the modern definition of democracy), the people of a particular locality use the representative as their voice in the government. Every few years, there is another election. This is the sole type of government that allows average citizens a say in the politics of a nation.
Now, naturally, I am a libertarian. A libertarian government would be the best, giving everyone maximum freedom and minimal government intervention. However, as libertarian government has proven to be rather rare, the next best form of government has to be a democratic regime.
Of course, democratic government is not perfect. There are flaws, and as conservatives/libertarians often complain, are prone to overregulating. But nevertheless, democratic government allows citizens a voice in the governing of a nation through local representatives. Can democratic governments collapse? Sure.
The alternative, of course, is an authoritarian type government, in the form of single-party rule, military rule, monarchy, oligarchy, or dictatorship. While authoritarian governments can and have produced economic prosperity and raised living standards, citizens get little say in the governing politics of a nation. Without peaceful means of changing the government, citizens often have to resort to armed force to challenge its authority. Additionally, authoritarian regimes almost always have poor records on basic civil liberties. Freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly are all extremely limited, let alone freedom from cruel and unusual punishment or the right to trial by jury
