1. Land (Topography)
Areas like the northern plains have widely available flat land, and fertile soil, which are preferable for inhabitation and for agriculture. Hence these areas are more abundantly populated as compared to areas with uneven topographies and soil not suitable for agriculture, like mountains.

2. Minerals
Industries tend to set up their factories closer to the areas of production/extraction. As the plateau region of india is abundant in minerals, it is heavily populated due to the large amounts of industries here.

3. Climate
People tend to prefer areas of moderate(non extreme) climate. Hence areas like mumbai which experience neither too cold nor too hot climate have large populations.

4. Facilities
The above points also build a good Base for businesses to set up in certain areas. People prefer living in areas which already provide different types of facilities due to businesses present there.
