the kind of depends on the protocols if you carry out the technique of layered protocol too far it gets very slow and inefficient. perhaps the major disadvantage is the processing and the data overhead. there is processing overhead because as many as 7 models are invoked to move data from the application through the communications software. This is data overhead because of the appendind of the multiple headers to the data..
