The city which was a hub of various activities during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries fell into ruin following the defeat of Vijayanagara in 1565. They were defeated by the Deccan Sultans (the rulers of Golconda, Ahmadnagar, Berar, Bidar and Bijapur).

Hampi bustled with commercial and cultural activities in its heydays but fell into ruins following the defeat of Vijayanagara in 1565 by the Deccani Sultans – the rulers of Golconda, Bijapur, Ahmadnagar, Berar and Bidar.
The Deccani Sultans chose to conquer Hampi as it offered strategic location, bordered by Tungabhadra river on one side and treacherous hills on the rest of the sides.
