Causes of the French Revolution

1. International: struggle for hegemony and Empire outstrips the fiscal resources of the state

2. Political conflict: conflict between the Monarchy and the nobility over the “reform” of the tax system led to paralysis and bankruptcy.

The Enlightenment: impulse for reform intensifies political conflicts; reinforces traditional aristocratic constitutionalism, one variant of which was laid out in Montequieu’s Spirit of the Laws; introduces new notions of good government, the most radical being popular sovereignty, as in Rousseau’s Social Contract [1762]; the attack on the regime and privileged class by the Literary Underground of “Grub Street;” the broadening influence of public opinion.

4. Social antagonisms between two rising groups: the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie

5. Ineffective ruler: Louis XVI

6. Economic hardship, especially the agrarian crisis of 1788-89 generates popular discontent and disorders caused by food shortages.

French revolution (1789 to1799) was the event responsible for the downfall of the Bourbon monarchy. the common people over to the Thousand Years Old Monarchial system of France. they established a democratic government system in France where people were divided into three estates the clergy (first estate ) the nobility 2nd Stage and the common people 3rd stage.the first and second estate have all the rights and privileges.The economic burden feel completely on the 3rd stage. They had to pay Heavy taxes and did not receive any privileges.this exploitation let to French Revolution.Liberty equality and fraternity was the motto of the French Revolution. on 17th June the3rd Estate declared itself as the national assembly and adopted a declaration of rights of man and citizen in August 1789. According to it all men are equal and free.in 1791 a constitution framed by the people came into force. it marked the end of absolute monarchy and established self government by the people. the French Revolution recognised people as a supremr powered and acted as a turning point in the history of democracy.....
