Answer:

Despite improvements in immunization coverage during the 1990s, national immunization rates for 2 year olds and older adults have not yet reached the public health objective of 90 percent coverage. Although state-level rates in Illinois and Michigan are generally equiva-lent to the U.S. national average, substantial variation in coverage rates occurs between states as well as within each state. The nation's immunization system faces serious challenges that could undermine the progress that has been made and hinder the effort still needed to achieve targeted levels of immunization coverage. Some of these demands include sustaining current rates of coverage with the addition of new and more expensive vaccines to the immunization schedule, an increase in the number of people to serve as a result of recommendations for adolescent and adult vaccination, and changes in the health care delivery system in general and immunization services in particular that can affect the availability and affordability of vaccines in the private sector.
