Water boils in sea level at 100°C and water in sea level freezes at 0°C. Boiling point and freezing point are the reference points of the Celsius thermometer.

There are two fixed reference points on a Celsius thermometer. One is the freezing point of water, which is 0 degrees Celsius and other is the boiling point of water, which is 100 degrees Celsius. However, when the Celsius thermostat was first formulated in 1742, it employed fixed points of 0 degrees for boiling water and 100 degrees for cooling water. These were rearranged in 1743 by Jean Pierre Cristin, and this is newly Celsius scale that is applied today.
