the role of the teacher is to ensure that the student is moving at a decent pace through the curriculum, meaning not so fast that they fall behind, but also not so long that they understand it well enough for them to have moved on a week ago

It is generally accepted that a learner-centred approach to teaching alters the role played by the learners. It is less often pointed out that learner-centred teaching involves a parallel change in the teacher's role. This article looks at the role of learning counsellor which the teacher has to assume in a learner-centred approach, and the responsibilities which this role brings with it.
