Answer:

An element symbol is one - two letter - abbreviation for a chemical element name . When a symbol consists of two letters, the first letter is always capitalized ,while the second letter is lowercase.

Scientists standardized the short handed way to represent element, by their chemical symbol. One of the many reason it was developed was because using letters was the easiest way to represent the element . Another reason that we use chemical symbols is to allow us to write chemical formulas easily.

Explanation:

Each element is given its own chemical symbol ,like H for Hydrogen or O for Oxygen.

For example :- Mg is the correct symbol for magnesium ,but mg, mG and MG are wrong.

There are 118 elements known till date, of which 94 are found in nature. The rest have been made by scientists in laboratories.

Rules for writing the symbol of an element:

1. Symbols are the first one or two elements of their own name.

2. The first letter is always written in capitals (upper case) and the second letter is written in lower case. For example, Argon - Ag, and Oxygen - O

3. When names of more than one element start with the same letter then one of the symbols of that particular element is represented with two elements. For example, Hydrogen and Helium start with the same letter "h" so their symbols are 'H' for Hydrogen and 'He' for Helium.

4. We cannot use more than two elements while representing an element with its symbol.
