Explanation:

1. For Excel to recognize a formula, it must start with the equal sign (=)

2. The four basic arithmetic functions are +,-,* and /. An additional symbol is ^ (raise to a power)

3. The logical symbols are > (greater than), < (less than), <= (less than or equal to), >= (greater than or equal to) and <> (not equal to, or different than)

4. The basic IF function has the following syntax:

=IF(a logical test, value of cell if test is true, value of cell if test is false)

Example for an IF statement in cell C3:

=IF(A2>5,A2*B2,""), that is, if the value in cell A2 is greater than 5,

then cell C3 = value in A2 imes value in B2; if A@ is not greater than 5,

then cell C3 should show a blank.

5. Nested functions are created, for instance, when the IF function is used in a dependant manner. Excel 97 specifies that, "A formula can contain up to seven levels of nested functions."

Example for formula in C3: IF(A2>5,A2*B2,IF(A2<2,A2,B2)), that is, if value in A2 is greater than 5, C3 = A2*B2, oherwise, if As is smaller than 2, then C3 = As, and, if not, then C2 = B2.

6. THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE IS: If in doubt, click on Help in the main menu, then on Contents and Index, then on the Index tab. Then, type in a key word. Very often, you will find the solution to your problem here!
