The salient features of intensive agriculture are as follows:

1. The land holdings are very small-

Generally farms are divided through several generations and cultivation is done mainly to support one's own family.

2. Involves higher use of hand labour-

Simple tools are used for works like ploughing and harvesting. However, much ofthe work is done using one's hand.

It also involves a greater use of capital, human and animal labour and lack of modern equipment.

3. Higher yield of crops per unit area of land-

It is because productivity is higher due to the shortage of land and complete dependence on agriculture.

4. Dependence on soil and climate-

External factors play an important role. Monsoon decides productivity.

Riverine fertile alluvial soil provides a good condition for this type of farming.

5. Marketability is low-

Most of the production gets consumed by the inhabitants as the population is high, so little of it remains for marketing.
