Hardness is caused when a soap reacts with dissolved substances in the water to form insoluble precipitates. Some examples of salts are:

  • Calcium chloride (CaCl2)
  • Calcium sulphate (CaSO4)
  • Magnesium chloride (MgCl2)
  • Magnesium sulphate (MgSO4)

The commonest substances that cause hardness are soluble salts of Calcium and Magnesium. Some may also define hardness as following Hardness in water is caused by the presence of multivalent cations in the water in the form of dissolved salts.

Answer:

Chloride ions , sulphate ions of Catayons are responsible for hardness of water. calcium and magnesium are the most common sources of water hardness. The permanent hardness of water may be due to the presence of chlorides or sulphates of calcium or magnesium or of both.
