Here is the sign conventions for concave mirror.

  • u is always negative for a real object.
  • f(focal length) is always negative.
  • v is always negative except when object is placed btw pole and focus and image is formed behind the mirror.
  • h(of object) is considered always positive.
  • h(of image) is positive for virtual and erect image . This happen only in one case when the object is placed btw P and F. In all other cases h(of image) is negative.
  • m(magnification) is positive for virtual and erect image and negative for real and inverted image. Only when object is placed between P and F, the value of m is positive. Fo all other cases m is negative.

Extra Information as Note !!

  • v is positive only when image is formed behind the mirror . In this case, Image is virtual and erect.
