the elements of group 7a is referred to as halogen. in order to increasing atomic number:
Fluorine
Chlorine
Bromine
Iodine
Astatine
All in this group are characterized by the presence of 7 e- in an outer shell, and hence have the ability to gain an e- to form negative ions w/ a completed octet of valence e-’s.
All share these traits of being very reactive, and in particular form substitution compounds w/ numerous organic compounds. Although these elements also have other valences all have a -1 valence in common.

It's my own answer and not copied from others!
=========================================
Halogens are group 7A elements and have same configuration of
=> nS2 nP5
All halogens have a lack of 1 electron to attain its octets and thus have 7 electrons in the outer shell.
They all are very likely to attain an octet state and thus have a probable valency of - 1. They are electronegative and can also have valencies of +1, +3,+5, +7 as per reacted with the elements having more electronegativity than them.
