Group 17 or Vll A of the periodic table is confined to the halogen family. 'Halogens' mean salt formers so the elements present in this group help in forming salts.

This a group of non metals and have 7 electrons in their outermost shell so the form an electrovalent or ionic bond with the metals in order to complete their octet.

These are generally gases and are diatomic in nature.

Generally they do not react with dilute acids and water.

They are strong oxidising agents (cause reduction).

Besides forming ionic bonds with metals they form covalent bonds with non metals.
