The water cycle describes the movement of water on the surface of the earth. Its a continuous process that includes six steps. They are evaporation, transpiration,  condensation, precipitation, runoff, and  percolation.

Evaporation is the process of a liquid turning into gas or water vapor. Water from oceans, lakes, rivers, or any other bodies of water rises up and evaporates. Transpiration is the same as this but it evaporates from the leaves of plants instead of bodies of water.

Then, condensation occurs. This changes the state of water from gas to liquid. After water rises up into the atmosphere, it condenses or forms clouds.

Soon the clouds become very heavy and then precipitation happens. This is the process of a liquid coming down as rain, sleet or snow.

This creates runoff which is water that travels on the surface and fills up bodies of water. Sometimes this water turns into ground water or water that is soaked up into the ground. This process is called percolation. Water flows downward under the layers of the soil.

This ends the water cycle. Then, it starts again.
