The Puranas provide a lot of information about the period, and Kalidasa is believed to belong to that period.
He was a famous poet and dramatist. Old coins, paintings, monuments, and seals are the archeological sources of information that were discovered.
Fahien, the Chinese traveler, and a Buddhist monk wrote about his experiences visiting the empire during that period.
The sources both archaelogical and literary inform us about Guptas :-
•The allahabad pillar incription (Prayaga Prasasti) of Harisena.
•Coins of the Guptas.
Literary sources were :-
•Works of Kalidasa, Sudraka, Vishakhadatta (for the Guptas).

Sri Gupta was the first ruler of this Dynasty. He was followed by Ghatotkachagupta. Chandragupta was the first powerful ruler of the Gupta Dynasty.
