Controlling the speed of the DC shunt can be achieved by the following ways

1)Armature resistance control method : This method is preferable for operating the motor at below rated speeds and power wastage is more in resistance as current flow is opposed.

2)Field control method : This method is preferable for operating the motor at above rated speeds and power dissipation is less as current flow is less in field circuit.
