1. Preparation of soil -

(a) It is the first step of crop production

(b) It involves ploughing and levelling

(c) This process of loosening and turning the soil is called ploughing and tilling

(d) plough , hoe are used for ploughing

(e) The ploughed soil is levelled by pressing it with a wooden levell

2. Sowing of seeds

(a) The process of putting seeds in the soil is called sowing

(b) Seeds should be of good quality

(c) Seeds should be sown at the correct depth and at proper distance

3. Adding manure or fertilizers

4. Irrigation

Watering of crops at regular entervals of time is called irrigation.

There are two methods of irrigation -

(a) Traditional method -

- Moat ( pulley system

(b) Modern method -

- Sprinkler system-- The perpendicular pipes having nozzles on top are called sprinklers. The sprinklers are joined to main pipeline. When pump is switch on the water through the rotating nozzles sprinkled over the crops.

Sprinklers are very useful Sandy soil or on the uneven land.

- Drip Irrigation -- In this system hole in pipes allow water to fall drop by drop near the roots water is not wasted at all.

5. Removal of seeds

(a) The unwanted plant which grow along with a cultivated crop in a field are called weeds.

( b) The process of removing weeds from crop field is called weeding.

6. Harvesting

(a) The process of cutting and gathering of crop after it's maturation is called harvesting

( b) Harvesting can be done by -

- by hands ( using sickle )

- by machines ( harvester )

(c) The grains are separated from the chaff by a process called threshing

(d) Combines --- A machine performs harvesting and threshing both.

7. Storage

(a) The grains are dried well in the sun to reduce moisture in them

(b) This prevents attacks by insects , nests , bacteria and fungi.

(c) On a small scale grains are stored in just bags.

(d) On a commercial scale , grains are stored in gunny bags in granries or in silows.
