1.Scan the data to locate regions of maximum and minimum values to see the overall pattern of values.

2.Begin with a highest or lowest value, and use a pencil to lightly draw a line separating lower values and higher values.

3.Lightly draw the remaining isopleths and adjust the spacings to show smooth transitions from areas of close spacing to areas of wide spacing.

4.Do not draw isopleths in areas where there is no data.  Every isopleth should have at least one value on each side of it.

5.Isopleths never cross, merge or branch.

6..After you refine your lines, darken and label the isopleths.  Usually lines are labeled on both ends at the edge of the map.  If it is a closed isopleth, break the line in a convenient place for the label.
