Forest ecosystems consist of organisms (plants, animals and micro-organisms) and their habitats (the soil and air). The functioning of forest ecosystems is characterised by energy and nutrient flows and cycling, biomass production and the decomposition of dead organic matter.

a forest ecosystem is a natural woodland unit consisting of all plants, animals and micro-organisms (Biotic components) in that area functioning together with all of the non-living physical (abiotic) factors of the environment. The forest ecosystem is very important.
