Water can become impure by two ways - by dissolving some substances and by just getting mixed up by some substances.
Water comes into contact with many other materials in nature right from its source (river, lake, underground spring, borewell etc.) and being a good solvent dissolves some salts. It also picks up organic contamination - bacteria, amoeba, viruses and some other micro organisms. It may get contaminated with drainage water because of the leakages in the pipes that run close to each other.
Thus before it reaches you, there are several ways for the water to get impure
